When these media outlets would publish a story that had a click-bait title with a matching attention-grabbing photo, you can bet that it not only got millions of likes but people would share it like crazy.

A word of mouth

Facebook then took stock of what was happening and realized that it was settling for cents on the dollar.

There was really no incentive for these media outlets to boost their posts or take out specialized ads because Facebook’s platform was so easy in pushing organic word of mouth. This is still plain old word of mouth, but in a digital form.

So, what do you think happened? Well, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Facebook started cutting down on the reach of media outlets as well as private brands on Facebook. Good luck reaching 10% of the people who like your page.

Even if people selected to show your content first on their timeline, you still have to wait in line. If that person chose that setting for many other pages, then you can bet that you will only reach a fraction of the people who have expressed a specific interest in whatever it is you are sharing.
